In celebration of Independence Day, we pay homage to American beauties and their iconic fashion.
Name: Rita Hayworth
Hometown: Brooklyn, NY
Hayworth was without a doubt the sweetheart of the 1940s. Her long, flowing wavy auburn locks, beautiful red lipstick and love for all things ball gowns, minks and elbow-length finger gloves, Hayworth truly defined what it meant to be glamorous and sophisticated.
Hometown: Los Angeles, CA
Monroe took sensuality and elegance to a whole new level when she rolled into Hollywood in the early 1950s. Her signature looks? Low-cut dresses that hugged her hourglass figure and beautiful shimmery accessories we like to call diamonds (and of course what she likes to call her best friend).
Hometown: Philadelphia, PA
On the other end of the spectrum of Monroe was the effervescent actress Grace Kelly. Kelly truly was the All-American girl, with her conservative style of simple shirts with popped collars paired up with petticoats, gloves, a pearl necklace and a gorgeous dress or her very elegant red carpet styles, Kelly always looked ravishing. She defined what it meant to have grace and royal class.
Hometown: Southampton, NY
Otherwise known as Jackie O, Mrs. Kennedy is considered to be one of the greatest fashion icons of all time. With her mix of brightly colored dress suits and pillbox hats or her very casual white jeans with a black shirt look, Jackie made the presidency and the White House more relatable to the average American citizen. She set a new standard for First Lady fashions and certainly painted the White House with a new coat of fabulous.
Hometown: Bay City, MI
Madonna certainly is a fashion chameleon. Known for her ever-changing looks and persona that coincided with each album release, Madonna has always managed to shock audiences with her fashion choices. She truly made her mark, however, in the 1980s where she popularized such trends as fingerless gloves, leggings, headbands and hair bows, fishnets, lace, crucifix jewelry, long string-bead necklaces and of course bras as outerwear.
Hometown: New York City, NY
With a wardrobe that is most certainly not traditional by any means, Gaga is one who is never afraid to push the boundaries. Wearing eye catching pieces such as a meat dress, cone bras (certainly an homage to her predecessor Madonna), fishnets, skyscraper heels and almost anything Vintage Versace, Gaga truly represents the new-age generation’s ideals of dramatically expressing oneself through their fashion.
Hometown: Chicago, IL
Following in the footsteps of fellow First Lady fashionistas Jacqueline Onassis and Nancy Regan, Michelle Obama has made her mark in the political world not only for her humanitarian work but also for her extremely trendy closet. Working with high-designers like Michael Kors, Zac Posen, Thom Browne and J. Mendel to dress her with all things metallic, diamond-encrusted or brightly colored for a simple, yet chic look, Obama has shaken up what it means to be First Lady of the United States.
